Too many trends, empty promises, and overly simplified 'solutions' in play. Who are we kidding that any of these silver bullets are actually going to deliver meaningful, sustainable, or market leading results? If we ask ourselves, do we TRULY believe they can? Or are we so overwhelmed by the growing breadth and depth of stuff that 'HR' has to manage every year, that we are lured in by these easy to execute and standardised approaches so, we can tick that box and move on to the next mediocre activity on the to do list. It's short-termism and its an epidemic. Its a little dopamine hit and it's very addictive. However, it is becoming abundantly clear, that this approach has hidden years of stored neglect, and those short-term wins have left a series of long-term and embedded chaos in their wake. That collective of dopamine wins have turned into an epdemic of burnout, disengagement, and demotivation, the worst of which is being felt by HR themselves. The only option now is to start unravelling the tangled ball of wool and unfortunately that's slow and painful and fiddly. But when all those different colour pieces are laid out and can be seen and understood clearly, then we can start knitting a totally awesome and beautifully unique jumper which truly represents the vision we have for the employee experience that we both want and need to remain relevant and competitive. And guess what? Get the jumper right and your employees will wear it with joy and pride and tell others how comfortable it is.
