I think this is a fantastic piece, and I couldn’t agree more with the idea that we need to funnel bullies’ energies elsewhere. Because, to your point, many of them are really good at working towards that end goal. My recommendation for these types of folks is that there is space for them, but it could be best to keep them in individual contributor roles. The path upward may include people management, but this shouldn’t always be the case, and signs of bullying should certainly be factored in when making these decisions. Lastly, it’s important to consider the possible consequences of not holding these folks accountable by means of termination, for example. Because sometimes, a bully’s behavior certainly necessitates swift and drastic action.
