This article challenges conventional wisdom about workplace bullies, arguing that their aggression may stem from high confidence and a strong drive for dominance, rather than low self-esteem. Research suggests a biological basis for this behaviour, rooted in evolutionary instincts for territoriality and leadership. The author proposes that instead of trying to eliminate bullying, organizations should focus on channelling bullies' aggressive energy into productive activities through coaching or other methods emphasizing self-control. This approach views bullies as potentially valuable leaders whose behaviour needs redirection rather than suppression. The article concludes by suggesting that successful leaders often exhibit assertive behaviour and that the key is managing this drive, not eliminating it.
